Dog Age to Human Years Calculator
The familiar “multiply by 7” shortcut misses how quickly dogs mature early in life. This calculator shows a research-based comparison—not a dog's literal or exact human age.
Where the formula comes from
Researchers compared age-related DNA methylation changes in 104 Labrador Retrievers with changes observed in humans. Their analysis described a non-linear relationship and presented this simplified translation:
Human_Age = 16 × ln(Dog_Age) + 31 The natural logarithm reflects rapid change early in life and slower change later. However, the study focused on one breed and molecular markers—not every aspect of health or behavior in every dog. Breed, body size, and individual health affect aging, so use the output as an illustration.

Adult size and the number on a scale are influenced by factors this calculator cannot fully observe:
- Genetics: Parents and more distant ancestry influence frame, maturation speed, and adult weight.
- Body condition: Two dogs with the same height and frame can weigh differently because of fat and muscle.
- Health and nutrition: Illness, parasites, appetite, and diet can change a growth trajectory and require professional assessment.
- Measurement error: Different scales, movement, and rounding can make short-term changes look larger than they are.
