This page documents exactly what the puppy weight calculator does—and what it cannot know.

Short version

The calculator estimates what fraction of adult weight a puppy may have reached at its current age. It divides the current weight by that fraction, applies a small sex adjustment when selected, and reports a wide uncertainty range. A breed selection gently pulls the estimate toward that breed's typical adult range.

Estimated adult weight = current weight ÷ estimated fraction of adult weight at that age

This is an educational heuristic, not a clinically validated prediction model. It does not reproduce the statistical models from the studies below and has not been tested against an independent set of individual dogs.

Age-to-maturity assumptions

Smaller dogs generally reach adult weight sooner than larger dogs. We use the following editable curve points and linearly interpolate between them so the estimate changes smoothly from one week to the next.

Other adjustments

  • Unknown size: the calculator uses the medium curve and widens the result range.
  • Sex: choosing male raises the central estimate by 3%; choosing female lowers it by 3%. “Unknown” makes no adjustment.
  • Breed: 70% of the central estimate comes from the observed age/weight curve and 30% from the midpoint of the breed's listed adult range.
  • Uncertainty: the displayed range is ±25% before 12 weeks, ±20% from 12–23 weeks, and ±15% at 24 weeks or older. Unknown size adds five percentage points.

Why a range is more honest

One weight measurement cannot identify a dog's full ancestry, body condition, illness history, nutrition, or future growth spurts. Mixed-breed dogs and very young puppies can be especially difficult to estimate. Even a well-measured puppy may finish outside the displayed range.

Use the result to plan broadly and compare trends over time. If growth changes suddenly, a puppy is thin or lethargic, or feeding is a concern, ask a licensed veterinarian rather than relying on the calculator.

Known limitations and future validation

The curve points and adjustment weights above are our modeling choices. They should not be confused with the percentile charts or equations in the cited papers. We plan to publish an error analysis if we obtain a sufficiently large, permissioned dataset containing puppy age, puppy weight, and verified adult weight. Until then, the output should be treated as a rough planning range.
